Description

An historical museum committed to collecting, preserving and exhibiting artifacts that exemplify the cultural heritage of rural Orange County emphasizing James Madison and others who made substantial contributions to the area. Permanent exhibit on Madison and the Agriculture and Transportation Hall are on display.

The James Madison Museum is just minutes from the gates of Montpelier, his home in Orange County, Virginia. Located in the Town of Orange, a block off of historic Main Street with it's galleries, shops, restaurants and lovely Taylor Park.

Members to the James Madison Museum receive free admission to the museum for themselves, a ten per cent discount in the Museum's Gift Shop and our quarterly newsletter. The publication features news of museum events, special exhibits and other items of interest.

Mission

The mission of the James Madison Museum is to serve the community by: Collecting and preserving the artifacts and cultural heritage of 18th, 19th, and 20th century rural Virginia; and promoting an awareness and appreciation of the lives and achievements of James Madison and others who made a unique contribution to the region.

History

The structure where the museum now resides was originally built in 1928 as the Powell Nash car dealership. Adjacent to, and now owned by the museum, is the former Hill Top Restaurant (which in the early century served as a gas station).

Educational Programs

The James Madison Museum works with the Orange County Boys and Girls Clubs and home-schooled children, reinforcing and expanding upon the school history programs curriculum. Additionally, we provide lecture series, some with book signings by the authors, covering numerous areas ranging from the Revolunary and Civil Wars to planting and harvesting herbs and flowers. These lectures are provided free to the public.

Publications

The Museum distributes a quarterly newsletter by e-mail or U.S. Postal Service. If you would like to receive a copy, please contact us at info@jamesmadisonmus.org or call us at (540) 672-1776.
