Thomaston Historical Society
Thomaston, Maine

General, Historical Society

The Thomaston Historical seeks to preserve the town's rich history, starting from the area's discovery by Captain George Waymouth in 1605. It is a town of many lifetimes. The first lasting settlement started in 1763, leading to the incorporation of Thomaston in 1777. In 1795 General Henry Knox, important Revolutionary War Patriot and General George Washington's Secretary of War, built a mansion place in Thomaston on the shores of the St. George River and initiated many new industries. Shipbuilding and lime quarries were major industries up until the early 1900s.
