Francis and Ann Marie Koenig first came to Calvert County in 1955 seeking a retreat from his career as an architecht/builder/developer in Washington, DC. They quickly fell in love with the area and in 1956 built a beach house in Long Beach. Soon they became avid sailors and could often be found heading out of Flag Harbor Marina on their sailboat, "Annmarie." They shared their love for the area with their family, taking their grandchildren for walks through the American Chestnut Land Trust on Parker's Creek.

Encompassing 142 acres, with various facilities and extensive nature trails, the primary focus of this site is cultural and natural history. The Historical Park & Museum is dedicated to the legacy of the Colonial farmer, clockmaker, mathematician, astronomer,and Federal Territority surveyor, Benjamin Banneker, known as the first African American man of science.

Built in 1858 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Evergreen House is a magnificent 48-room Italianate mansion on 26 wooded acres in Baltimore. Formerly the home of two generations of Baltimore's prominent Garrett family, Evergreen House and its collection of over 50,000 objects were bequeathed to the Johns Hopkins University in 1942 with the stipulation that the estate remain open to "lovers of music, art, and beautiful things." Since opening to the public in 1990, Evergreen House has surpassed mere historic preservation to creatively respond to the Garretts' legacy.

A group of volunteers committed to preserving life as it was known by the people living in the Clear Spring area generations ago. This group of volunteers have preserved Plumb Grove, once a dilapidated house, and filled the rooms with period furniture from other local homes, furniture made in Clear Spring, and Maryland made furniture. The Plumb Grove lawn contains 126 heritage roses and heritage flowers, vegetables and herbs, all enjoyed centuries ago by other people. Out buildings include a barn displaying a collection of items used by the people who once worked the land, tended stores, and manufactured items in the Clear Spring community. There is also a summer kitchen and a deluxe outhouse.

A wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for the new Visitors’ Orientation and Education Center was held on June 3, 2008 and was a resounding success! The new 10,000 square foot state of the art “green” building is a public-private partnership among the Cylburn Arboretum Association, the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, the Horticultural Society of Maryland and Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.

The W Henry Duvall Tool Museum houses trade tools, household items and farm implements from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The museum is named for W Henry Duvall, who amassed most of the items found in this extensive collection acquired by MARYLAND-NATIONAL CAPITAL PARK AND PLANNING COMMISSION (M-NCPPC) in 1981.

Harriet Tubman was a deeply spiritual woman who lived her ideals and dedicated her life to freedom. She is the Underground Railroad’s best known conductor and before the Civil War repeatedly risked her life to guide nearly 70 enslaved people north to new lives of freedom. This new national historical park preserves the same landscapes that Tubman used to carry herself and others away from slavery.
