Governor Trumbull's War Office

During the American Revolution, the former store and office where Jonathan Trumbull conducted his mercantile business became the headquarters to plan the defense of the colony of Connecticut. Located near the northwest corner of the Hartford-Norwich Highway (Route 207) and West Town St. Jonathan Trumbull served as the Governor of both the colony and the state from 1769 - 1784, a period of 15 years.
Here in the War Office, as it came to be called, Governor Trumbull convened the Council of Safety to deal with the day to day emergencies. Many of the over 1100 meetings of the council were held in this building from 1775 to 1784.

New London Maritime Society and Custom House Maritime Museum

The Custom House Maritime Museum occupies a Greek Revival building that has served as New London's custom house since it was opened in 1835. Exhibits and programs illustrate aspects of New London's multi-faceted maritime history, among them the Amistad Affair (the slave ship captured in 1839 and first brought to New London); area lighthouses; the whaling industry; the War of 1812; yachting; naval submarine history; and customs collection.

Norwalk Historical Society

The Norwalk Historical Society was incorporated in 1899 with the purpose of promoting and encouraging historical research in Norwalk. That vision is kept alive today with the re-establishment of the NHS in 1949 and the continued focus on “the research, preservation, and promotion of interest in the history of Norwalk.” Members of the NHS bring Norwalk’s history to the public eye through contributions, donations, and volunteer time in a variety of NHS sponsored activities.

Prudence Crandall Museum

Seth Thomas Bradstreet House Museum

The Society belongs to the Farmington Valley Visitors Association, Connecticut League of History Organizations, Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.

Old New Gate Prison & Copper Mine

The underground tunnels of an abandoned copper mine began to be used as a prison in Dec 1773. Over 800 inmates were confined here until the facility was closed in 1827.

Samuel Huntington Homestead

The Huntington Homestead in Scotland, Connecticut, is the birthplace of Samuel Huntington, a distinguished statesman during the Revolutionary War and early Republic. The remarkably well-preserved site includes an eighteenth-century house on its original foundation surrounded by acres of farmland, bordered by Merrick Brook. It includes old growth trees, stone walls, an abandoned road, and other interesting features. The Huntington Homestead was a surprising discovery so late in the twentieth century, when most historic sites had already been enshrined or ravaged. It is a National Historic Landmark.
