The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. Focusing on exhibitions of international contemporary art, The Bass presents mid-career and established artists reflecting the spirit and international character of Miami Beach. The Bass seeks to expand the interpretation of contemporary art by incorporating disciplines of contemporary culture, such as design, fashion and architecture, into the exhibition program. Recognized for organizing solo museum exhibitions of international artists such as Erwin Wurm, Mika Rottenberg and Pascale Marthine Tayou, The Bass also presents major exhibitions by influential artists such as El Anatsui, Isaac Julien, Eve Sussman, and Piotr Uklanski.

Housed in two former adjacent synagogues, on the National Register of Historic Places, this unique South Beach Museum restored the beautiful buildings and connected them with a skylighted bistro. The mission of The Wolfsonian as a museum and research center is reflected in its multidisciplinary approach to looking at objects as both agents and expressions of change. It does so through exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and individual scholarship. While these objects can best be understood in the context in which they were created, they illuminate as much about our times as they reveal about their own. The following mission statement describes its purpose:

The Wolfsonian-Florida International University uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world.
