The Marston House Museum is one of San Diego's finest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement and was constructed in 1905 for George W. Marston and his wife, Anna Gunn Marston. George Marston is noted for many things but most prominently as a civic leader whose interest and work in historic preservation, conservation and history is renowned. The property was designed and built by the internationally renowned architects William Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. Surrounded by five acres of rolling lawns, manicured formal gardens, and rustic canyon gardens, this 8,500 square-foot home became a house museum in 1987 after the Marston family gifted it to the City of San Diego for the enjoyment of the public.

California State Parks announced May 13, 2011 a plan to close 70 of its 278 parks due to budget cuts. These cuts are mandated by AB 95, which was passed by the Legislature and signed into Law by the Governor. These closures are through the years 2011 – 13. This facility is one of the 70 closures.

The Grace Hudson Museum and Sun House in Ukiah, California, is an art, history and anthropology museum focusing on the lifeworks of artist Grace Carpenter Hudson (1865-1937) and her ethnologist husband, Dr. John W. Hudson (1857-1936). Changing interdisciplinary exhibitions and public programs feature Western American art, California Indian cultures, histories of California's diverse North Coast region, and the work of contemporary regional artists.

The Museum was an orphanage in Gold Rush times. It was later expanded to include a school. The Museum depicts the era with artifacts, clothing and furnishings. Don't forget the magnificent 130-year-old rose garden in front of the building.

Green Hotel

The Green Hotel is located in downtown Shafter near the corner of Central Avenue and James Street, and is fully restored. The Hotel is open by invitation throughout the year. Tours may be arranged by appointment. For details, call 661-746-1913. The Green Hotel was built in 1913 by the Kern County Land Company to provide lodging for prospective buyers of the new town’s lots. It is the oldest commercial building in Shafter. The Hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a California Point of Interest.

Guest House Museum

Inside the Museum one will find pictures and artifacts telling the history of the forest products industry on the Mendocino Coast and the city of Fort Bragg. Pictures include water shipping, railroads, mills and wood scenes and the earthquake of 1906.

Of shingled Queen Anne style, the Guest House was built primarily in coast redwood in 1892 for Tom Johnson, a family business partner in Fort Bragg Redwood Company, as his private residence. All wood used in the structure was milled by Fort Bragg Redwood Company. Before the house was finished and by direction of the company's founder, Charles Russell Johnson, it became the lumber company's home for senior officials and VIP guest visitors to the Fort Bragg mill and logging sites.
