Weeden House Museum

Historic House

Built in 1819, home of poet/artist Maria Howard Weeden, thought to be a man. Born in the house in 1846, died in the house in 1905. Became famous for painting black faces and creating poetry from their dialect. One of her books used in Gone With the Wind in 1939, did work for Joel Chandler Harris (Uncle Remus) and for Charles Dickens. Family owned house for 111 years. Opened as museum in 1981. Ghosts sited.

The nationally accredited Museum fills its seven galleries with a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, including prestigious traveling exhibits and the work of nationally and regionally acclaimed artists. The Museum's own 2,300-piece permanent collection also forms the basis for exhibitions.

The Museum is pleased to be one of only eight museums nationwide to host Becoming a Nation: Americana from the Diplomatic Reception Rooms, U.S. Department of state. The Museum has partnered with local attractions to present a summer celebrating our nation's history. Becoming a Nation will be on view May 22 - July 18, 2004.
